Every window asks something different. A west-facing living room needs glare controlled without losing the view; a bedroom needs darkness; a bathroom needs something that tolerates steam. The notes below set out what each style of blind does well, so you can narrow the field before you see samples.

Roller blinds
The most adaptable of the group, and the least visually intrusive. The fabric determines the behaviour: sunscreen weaves cut glare and heat while keeping the outlook, light-filtering fabrics soften daylight and give privacy, and blockout fabrics exclude light almost entirely. A dual bracket carries two rollers on one window, so a single blind can shift from open view to full darkness.

Sheer shadings
Horizontal fabric vanes suspended between two layers of sheer. Tilting the vanes changes the light from bright and open to soft and diffused, and closing them gives privacy while the sheer still carries daylight into the room. Suited to living areas where the quality of light matters as much as the degree of it.

Roman blinds
Soft horizontal folds in curtain fabric, giving the warmth and texture of a curtain within the footprint of a blind. Well suited to kitchens, studies, window seats and any window where floor-length curtains are impractical. Because they are made in curtain fabric, they can be matched to curtains elsewhere in the house.

Venetian blinds
Tilting slats, offering the most precise control of light and sightlines of any blind. Timber brings warmth and is best in living and sleeping areas. Fauxwood holds its shape in the humidity of bathrooms, kitchens and laundries where timber would warp. Aluminium is the slimmest profile and sits well in contemporary interiors.

Honeycomb shades
A cellular structure that traps a layer of still air against the glass, adding genuine insulation as well as light control. The most effective choice for west-facing rooms, large expanses of glass, and anywhere heat gain in summer or loss in winter is a concern. Available in light-filtering and blockout, and in a top-down bottom-up arrangement that admits daylight while preserving privacy at eye level.

Printed roller blinds
Roller blinds printed with a chosen design, turning the window into a deliberate feature rather than a background element. Suited to a room where one considered gesture is wanted.

Operation
All of these can be made manual or motorised. Motorisation is worth considering for tall or awkward windows, stairwell glazing, skylights, and banks of windows that would otherwise be adjusted one at a time. It also removes cords entirely, which matters in homes with young children.
